I've had lots of job...lots of them! But hands down, my most important job has been as a mother. My husband and I have 3 beautiful kids (and 2 border collie who were really kid #1 and kid #2). Up until the day before I had my first baby, I had a career as an elementary school teacher (my water broke 3 weeks early, the night before my last day of work).
The plan was for me to stay home and be with our kiddos until they were all in school. We are a military family and knew we'd be moving around...all 3 of my kids were born in a different state!
Less then a year after I had my third, I was starting to get the itch to do something creative. I've always loved to draw, paint, and do everything crafty, but photography has always been something I was passionate about. I had a dream of starting a photography business floating in my head for a very long time and I felt that the time was right. I still wanted to stay home with my little ones, I could work from home, and do something creative that I loved. But boy was I in for a shock!
Business is no joke. I didn't want a hobby, so I spent some time developing my craft, then started learning the business side of things. I had zero business experience and I have regrets about taking short cuts and diving right into a business, but I'm a hands-on kind of gal and I've learned a lot from my mistakes. It's been a bit of a roller coaster, but these ups and downs have made me stronger in many ways...
I've lacked a bit of confidence for as long as I can remember and it's taken my photography business to really help see my areas of weakness. However, through it all I never gave up...but I wanted to at least 58 times. Each time, I came back stronger.
I still feel that I am in the beginning business stages, but my goals have shifted slightly and I'm setting my sights on turning my little business into my career. I've grown over the last few years and still have a lot to prove to myself. I love being a mom. My kids are growing and I'm so thankful that I was able to be home with them. And it's okay to want more! I'm allowing myself to want more because I'm learning how to handle it all.
My #1 focus is my family, but I'm realizing more and more that I need to put myself higher on that ranking. We hear it all the time...we need to take care of ourselves if we are going to take care of other. Balance isn't always easy and I need to be flexible most days, but having goals helps to restore that balance when I get off track.
