I will be the first to admit that I am not good working with props. For that reason, I very rarely use them during sessions.
It takes a very special talent to pose a newborn baby using props like baskets, bean bags, and wraps. There is a ton of safety precautions that need to be taken and you really need to do your research. A newborn photographer should not be cheap! They most likely have studio, prop, and lighting costs and have gone through training on how to safely pose a newborn.
Since newborn photography is such a niche profession (meaning typically a newborn photographer specializes in working with just babies), I chose more of a lifestyle approach. Instead of posing baby by themselves, I incorporate parents and siblings.
Sessions are done in the comfort of your home using 100% natural light. All we need is a nice sunny window. Sessions can be don't throughout the house depending on the light. I will take a few minutes first to walk around your house and make suggestions.
You do not need to have a model home! You just had a baby...there is no need for a deep clean of your house, but I'm sure you don't want to remember your newborns first days with clutter all around :) So, a clean bed or even corner of a room will be perfect.
Traditional newborn photography is typically done within 2 weeks of the baby being born. This is done because posing a sleepy baby that young is easier. Once they are a few weeks old, they are awake much more and not going to cooperate as much through the poses.
Lifestyle newborn photography is more flexible with the timeline. I like to schedule a session within the first month. Your baby will be in your arms throughout the session...the place they love the most! We'll use the bed or crib for images of your baby by themselves.
I would love to work with your growing family! Contact me if you are having a baby and are looking for a more lifestyle approach to your newborn session!
