I've been living the "military life" for 12 years now. It's a life I didn't know much about growing up because not many members of my family had served and it just wasn't the topic of conversation during get togethers. There's not much that can prepare you for the deployments, the work-ups, the 'I've got to leave and can't tell you where I'm going', and the fun of not knowing where you'll be living next, it's something as a spouse that you just deal with...day by day.
Jessica is a friend and neighbor who knows these feeling all too well. Her husband, Dan is deployed to Afghanistan for a year. The internet is their only way of connecting right now, which can be wonderful, but will never replace the feeling of being together.
As adults, we adapt. But when you have children, you never really know how a deployment can affect them. Jessica and Dan have 2 kids who have thankfully been doing great! They will all get to see Dan again for the holidays before he'll have to return to Afghanistan to finish his deployment.
Being separated for months at a time puts a lot of strain on a relationship, then throw the uncertainty of war on top of that and that's when you need to dig down deep for strength you never knew what there.
I had the opportunity to photograph Jessica with her daughter and son. My hope is that they look back on these images and see how strong they all were at this time.
